Veteran-Centered Chiropractic Care from Dr. David Fetherman

Dr. David Fetherman, DC, leads our VA Community Care program at Spine-Ability.

At Spine-Ability, supporting veterans is personal. Dr. David Fetherman, DC, brings his Palmer Florida training and Scranton neuroscience background to every veteran he treats, with special focus on traumatic spinal injuries, post-service musculoskeletal pain, and the day-to-day aches that follow years of physical service. Our entire 15-person team is trained to make every visit feel welcoming, not bureaucratic.

We proudly serve veterans across Apollo Beach, Riverview, Tampa, Brandon, Ruskin, Sun City Center, Gibsonton, and the surrounding Hillsborough County communities. Both of our offices, 901 Apollo Beach Blvd and 12953 S US Hwy 301 in Riverview, are credentialed providers in the VA Community Care Network.

From your first phone call to your last rehab visit, we handle the paperwork so you can focus on healing. Call (813) 938-7500 and ask for our VA coordinator.

How VA Community Care Works at Spine-Ability

A step-by-step look at the referral and visit process.

Step 1: Referral from your VA team. Talk to your VA primary care provider (PCP) and request a community care chiropractic referral. Ask them to send the authorization to Spine-Ability. If you are not sure how to start the conversation, our front desk team can guide you.

Step 2: Authorization confirmation. Once the VA approves your referral, our billing coordinator receives the paperwork directly. We will call you to confirm the authorized number of visits and to schedule your first appointment.

Step 3: Your visits. Dr. Fetherman or one of our other four chiropractors will perform a thorough exam, review your VA medical records, and build a personalized care plan covering chiropractic adjustments, soft tissue therapy, rehabilitative exercises, and any other modalities authorized.

Step 4: Reporting back. We send progress notes to your VA care team on a regular schedule. If you need an extension of visits, we file the request on your behalf so you can keep moving forward without an interruption in care.

What to Bring to Your First VA Visit

Arrive with these documents to speed up your check-in.

To make your first visit smooth and to avoid any billing delays on the VA side, please bring the following items with you:

  • VA Identification Card (Veteran Health Identification Card, or VHIC).
  • VA Community Care authorization letter showing the authorized provider, dates of service, and visit count.
  • Photo ID such as a driver license or military ID.
  • Brief medical records summary: a list of current medications, imaging reports (X-ray, MRI), and any prior chiropractic or physical therapy notes if you have them. If you do not have these, do not worry, we can request them.
  • Comfortable clothing you can move in for the exam and any same-day treatment.

If anything is missing, we will work with your VA care team to get it sorted before your next visit. The goal is to never delay your treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions veterans ask us most often.

Do you accept VA Community Care?

Yes. Spine-Ability is a credentialed VA Community Care Network provider at both our Apollo Beach and Riverview locations. We accept referrals routed through Optum and TriWest for chiropractic and rehabilitation services.

How do I book a VA appointment at Spine-Ability?

Ask your VA primary care provider for a community care referral to Spine-Ability. Once the authorization arrives in our office, our team will call you within one business day to schedule your first visit.

What do I need to bring to my first visit?

Please bring your VA Health Identification Card, your authorization letter, a photo ID, and any current imaging reports or medication lists if you have them. We will help fill in any gaps after your appointment.

Is there a co-pay for VA Community Care chiropractic visits?

Most veterans pay nothing out of pocket when their visits are authorized through VA Community Care. Co-pays, if any, are determined by your VA priority group, not by our office. We will review your authorization with you on day one.

Can I still see my regular VA provider while being treated here?

Absolutely. Community Care is designed to work alongside your existing VA care team. We send progress notes back to your VA primary care provider so everyone stays informed about your treatment plan and outcomes.

Can my spouse or family member come with me?

Of course. Family is welcome in our reception area, and your spouse or caregiver can join you in the treatment room if you prefer. Spine-Ability has been family-owned since 2015, and we treat every patient like part of ours.

What if my authorization runs out before I am better?

Our billing coordinator monitors every veteran's visit count and files extension requests with the VA on your behalf before authorization expires. We do the paperwork so you can focus on recovery.
