Understanding Chronic Pain and Tension
When pain becomes part of your daily routine, simple things start to feel hard. You wake up stiff, dread long drives, and notice tension creeping into your neck, shoulders and lower back by mid-afternoon. Headaches show up on a schedule, sleep gets lighter, and the medications that once helped may now bring side effects of their own. Many patients tell us they have tried physical therapy, over-the-counter remedies and stretching apps with limited, short-lived relief.
Acupuncture works with your body's own nervous system and circulatory pathways to interrupt that cycle. Using ultra-fine sterile needles at specific points, Dr. Deany helps reduce muscle tension, calm overactive pain signals and improve local blood flow. Many patients describe a sense of warmth, heaviness and deep relaxation during a session, followed by noticeable relief in the days that follow. Acupuncture pairs naturally with chiropractic adjustments, soft tissue therapy and Class IV laser therapy for a layered, drug-free approach.
The Science of Needle Therapy
Acupuncture is a treatment that originated in Traditional Chinese Medicine more than 2,000 years ago, in which very thin, sterile, single-use needles are placed at specific points on the body. Modern acupuncture is recognized by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which regulates acupuncture needles as medical devices, and is endorsed for several pain conditions by the National Institutes of Health and the World Health Organization.
Classical acupuncture maps the body using channels called meridians, along which energy (Qi) is said to flow. Western research describes the same point system in terms of neurology and physiology: stimulating these points can trigger the release of endorphins, modulate pain processing in the brain and spinal cord, and improve regional blood flow. A 2012 individual-patient-data meta-analysis published in Archives of Internal Medicine found that acupuncture produced clinically meaningful improvements in chronic back, neck and shoulder pain, osteoarthritis and headache compared with both sham acupuncture and usual care.
You will lie comfortably on a treatment table while Dr. Deany cleanses the skin and inserts a series of hair-thin needles at the planned points. Most patients feel a brief pinch and then little more than warmth or a dull heaviness. Needles typically stay in place for 20 to 30 minutes while you rest.
Some patients feel relief after the first session, while most conditions respond best over a course of 6 to 12 visits scheduled one to two times per week. According to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, acupuncture has consistent evidence of benefit for several common pain conditions.

Finding Your Best Path to Relief
Acupuncture is well suited for adults who want a drug-free option for chronic pain, stress or tension and who are open to a series of sessions rather than a one-time fix. During your consultation, Dr. Deany will review your medical history and discuss your goals to design a treatment plan.
If you have a complex medical history, please bring a current medication list to your first visit so Dr. Deany can tailor your plan safely. American Chiropractic Association resources reinforce the value of an integrative, conservative approach to pain.
Step-by-Step Process
Dr. Deany reviews your history, pain map and goals to choose meridian channels and point combinations.
Dr. Deany cleanses the skin and positions you comfortably for relaxed access to each acupuncture point.
Dr. Deany places ultra-fine sterile needles at selected points along the chosen meridians.
You rest 20-30 minutes while the points work, often with dim lighting and quiet music.
Dr. Deany removes the needles, checks how you feel and outlines your next-session plan.
What to Know
Acupuncture has an excellent safety profile when performed by a trained practitioner using sterile, single-use needles. Most patients experience minor effects that resolve within hours: small drops of bleeding or pinpoint bruising at needle sites, mild soreness, temporary fatigue, lightheadedness during the session, or a brief emotional release. Drinking water and resting after your appointment typically settles these effects within a few hours.
Serious adverse events are very rare. Large safety surveys of trained acupuncturists report serious complications in fewer than 1 in 10,000 sessions. Reported events include skin infection, nerve irritation and, very rarely, deeper tissue injury such as pneumothorax with chest-region needling. Using single-use sterile needles and proper anatomic technique nearly eliminates these risks.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration regulates acupuncture needles as Class II medical devices and requires single-use, sterile, individually packaged products. Dr. Deany follows clean needle technique protocols and reviews your medications and medical history before treatment. Tell her right away if you feel faint, sharp pain or unexpected numbness during a session so she can adjust the plan.
Acupuncture in the Tampa Bay area typically ranges from $75 to $150 per session, with initial evaluation visits running slightly higher due to the longer history intake. Most chronic conditions respond best over a course of 6 to 12 visits, so total investment depends on your specific condition, response to treatment and how many sessions Dr. Deany recommends. We will share a clear plan and per-visit pricing before your first treatment so there are no surprises.
Some commercial insurance plans now include limited acupuncture benefits, especially for chronic low back pain, and Medicare covers acupuncture for chronic low back pain under specific conditions. Florida Personal Injury Protection (PIP) auto coverage typically does NOT extend to acupuncture, even after an accident, so most patients pay self-pay for acupuncture care at Spine-Ability. We will verify your benefits and explain coverage clearly during scheduling.
